    'The Nutcracker' is the festive story of Clara-Marie's favorite toy and their adventures together in the land of the Sugarplum Fairy. Music from Tchaikovsky's famous ballet blends with marionettes and costume characters to create this unique production.   • Beauty and the Beast

    The timeless tale of a beastly prince who learns to live outside himself and discovers courage, companionship, trust, and love in the heart of a merchant's daughter. The grandeur of Czarist Russia provides the design inspiration for both the scenery and the elegant half life-size marionettes.

  • Sleeping Beauty

    Yet another elegant production created by the Puppet Co., 'Sleeping Beauty' combines romance and adventure in a story of fairies, frogs, kings and queens, and of course, a sleeping princess and the gallant prince destined to find her. Told with rod puppets and wonderful special effects, the show is a real treat for princesses and princes, big and small!

  • Little Red Riding Hood & the 3 Little Pigs

    What’s so bad about the Big Bad Wolf? At last, B.B. (Big Bad) Wolfe tells his side of the story, in rap, no less.  Has the notorious pork poacher and grandma impersonator gotten a bum rap, or is he truly deserving of his moniker?  You be the judge!  This tongue-in-cheek version of two children’s favorites uses humor and music to explore our fear of things we don’t understand.  This is one of our funniest productions and includes lots of audience participation.

  • The Wizard of Oz

    This amazing production recreates the characters illustrated by W. W. Denslow in a wide variety of puppet styles.  Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the tale follows closely the original story in L.   • Circus!

    In grand circus tradition, the "Grandest Show on Strings" features a panoply of pandemaniacal clowns, death-defying acrobats, and an amazing menagerie of fauna from the farthest reaches of the globe.  Performed by Christopher Piper, many of the acts were built more than 50 years ago by Christopher’s parents for "Len Piper’s International Marionette Circus."

  • Pinocchio

    Half life-size rod puppets, performed in the Italian “Comedia del Arte” style, tell Carlo Collodi’s story of what it means to be “real”. Share the trials and tribulations of the little live puppet as he finds in one adventure after another that the “easy way” isn’t always the right way.

  • Tales of Beatrix Potter

    Applause Unlimited of Richmond, VA is back at the Playhouse, presenting three of Potter’s favorite tales: “Two Bad Mice,” “Jemima Puddle-Duck,” and “Jeremy Fisher.” Christopher Hudert brings these stories to life through the everyday activities of a young girl as she dreams and plays alone in her room.
